Description
Jeff Oxman's October 1999 discovery of VAM-1J for the 1923 Peace Dollar revealed a diagonal die gouge cutting through the third long ray to the right of I in LIBERTY, with a raised dot below the gouge's right end. The diagonal orientation and associated raised dot create a distinctive two-part diagnostic identifiable under moderate magnification. Die gouges through the radiating rays are visually striking because they interrupt the geometric precision of the sunburst design. Cataloged as plate 1J II 1 B2a with I-3 importance and R-4 rarity estimating 31 to 100 known specimens, this variety is among the more obtainable scarce Peace Dollar varieties. The I-3 tertiary importance rating reflects its status as an interesting die feature rather than a major hub variety. The 1923 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had the second-highest mintage in the series, ensuring broad collector access.
