Description

Discovered in 2019 by colwillys, the 1925-P VAM-1AV Peace Dollar features a dramatic displaced field break between the D in UNITED and the left S in STATES on the reverse, where a radial die crack extending from the rim developed into a full displaced field break with raised metal along the fracture line. Cataloged as die pairing II 1 - B2a with an I-2 interest level and R-6 rarity — the R-6 designation indicating a very rare variety with only an estimated 13-30 specimens known — this is one of the scarcer die states in the 1925 Peace Dollar VAM catalog. The reverse die B2a also shows slightly doubled top portions of two olive leaves and the D in DOLLAR on the right side, adding a secondary diagnostic beyond the primary die break feature. The 1925-P Peace Dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a production of approximately 10.2 million pieces, part of the mid-1920s production run that represented the Peace Dollar's peak years. The displaced field break feature develops when a die crack widens under continued use and the metal on one side of the crack shifts relative to the other, producing a step or shelf visible on struck coins. The R-6 rarity makes VAM-1AV a significant find for Peace Dollar VAM collectors, and its relatively recent 2019 discovery demonstrates that new varieties continue to be identified even on well-studied dates nearly a century after mintage.
