Description

Horizontal die file lines running through the word PEACE on the reverse, with a slightly beveled field below the inscription, characterize this 1925 Peace Dollar variety discovered in 2017 by LD Lane (known as ChiefRet in the VAM collecting community). Cataloged as VAM-1AS with classification II1, reverse die B2a, interest level I-2, and R-5 rarity (estimated 1-30 known), the variety documents a targeted die repair on the reverse — the horizontal orientation of the file lines through PEACE suggests a deliberate effort to address a specific surface issue in the inscription area, possibly clash marks or die scratches. The slightly beveled field below PEACE indicates the filing removed enough die metal to alter the field's contour, creating a subtle slope where the filed area transitions to the untouched surface below. PEACE is the most prominent inscription on de Francisci's reverse, arching below the perched eagle, and file lines through these letters create raised horizontal marks that cut across the word on struck coins. Unlike the companion VAM-1AR with its widespread obverse filing, VAM-1AS shows concentrated reverse work limited to the PEACE inscription area. Struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm at the Philadelphia Mint. Examine the word PEACE for horizontal raised lines and check the field immediately below for the characteristic bevel created by the die filing.
