Description

Die file lines and scribbles scattered across both the left and right fields and extending onto Liberty's face and neck give this 1925-P Peace Dollar a distinctive textured appearance — evidence of die surface work, likely an attempt to remove clash marks or repair surface imperfections. Discovered in 2017 and cataloged as VAM-1AR with classification II1, reverse die B2a, interest level I-2, and R-5 rarity (estimated 1-30 known), the variety documents extensive hand-finishing of the obverse die. The breadth of the filing — covering both fields and extending onto the portrait itself — suggests the die worker needed to address widespread surface issues, perhaps from a severe die clash that left ghost impressions across the entire obverse. File lines on a portrait create a particularly interesting visual effect, as the parallel tool marks cut across the flowing contours of de Francisci's radiant Liberty, overlaying mechanical precision on artistic detail. The 1925 Philadelphia Peace Dollar had a strong mintage, yet the aggressive die work that created these file lines apparently limited this die's service life, keeping the surviving population small. Struck in 90% silver at 38.1mm.
