Error
Description
Revised by Bill Wolverton in 2013, the 1925-P VAM-1AI1 carries die classification II1 with attribution code B2a under the title Die Scratches Left of P, rated I-2 R-5. The defining characteristic is a couple of diagonal die scratches to the left of the P in PEACE on the reverse — incuse lines in the die that transfer as raised marks on struck coins, providing a precise attribution marker. VAM-1AI1 is the earlier die state of VAM-1AI2, which was previously designated simply VAM-1AI before die state subdivision created the numbered suffixes. A key distinction is the absence of scribble-pattern die scratches to the right of the Eagle's Shoulder on VAM-1AI1, a feature that develops on the later VAM-1AI2 state. This separation allows collectors to sequence specimens and study die surface evolution through production. The 1925 Peace Dollar was struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark. Bill Wolverton's 2013 revision refined the documentation by establishing the 1AI1/1AI2 nomenclature, providing clearer attribution boundaries for this die pair.
