Description

Reported by David Close in 2011, the 1925-P Peace Dollar VAM-1AG "Die Scratches Face" documents four diagonal die scratches on Liberty's cheek in Anthony de Francisci's obverse portrait. Classified as B2a with an I-2 interest rating and R-5 rarity, this variety has an estimated population of 13 to 30 confirmed specimens. The four parallel diagonal scratches traverse the smooth field of Liberty's cheek — a prominent area of the obverse design where any die imperfection stands out against the uninterrupted facial contour. Die scratches are incuse lines in the die surface, likely caused by foreign material or handling damage during die preparation, that transfer as fine raised lines on struck coins. The diagonal orientation and grouping of four distinct scratches provide a clear attribution pattern, distinguishable from random contact marks acquired after striking. The 1925 Philadelphia issue carries a mintage of 10,198,000 pieces, a moderate production figure for the Peace Dollar series. Struck in 90% silver at 26.73 grams on 38.1mm planchets, VAM-1AG is best examined by tilting the coin under angled light to catch the four raised diagonal lines crossing Liberty's cheek behind the nose.
