Description

The 1925 Peace Dollar VAM-1AD is classified as II 1, B2a (Rusted/Worn Obverse Die, Die Gouge R), rarity I-3 R-6. Discovered in 2010, the obverse shows raised dots and splotches from a heavily rusted and worn die on Liberty's head and in the fields, with a wide vertical die gouge below R in TRVST. This variety is distinguished from VAM-1V and VAM-2A, which also exhibit rusted dies and die gouges at R respectively, but represent different die pairs with distinct characteristics. The degree of die rust on VAM-1AD is particularly extreme, producing an extensively pitted and worn obverse surface that stands out even among other rusted die Peace Dollar varieties. The R-6 rarity rating indicates this is a scarce variety, and the vertical gouge below R in TRVST combined with the severe rust pitting provides a two-feature obverse diagnostic.
