Description

Showing a D/D North displacement, this 1918-D Lincoln Wheat Cent RPM-002 documents the second cataloged repunched mint mark for the date, where the initial D punch was placed slightly south of the final position. When the correcting punch was applied, traces of the first strike remained visible to the north — hence the D/D North classification. Attributed by VarietyVista with UVC-1179 and DMR-003, three die stages are tracked: Stage A with the obverse at early die state and reverse at late die state, Stage B at mid-die state unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state also unconfirmed. The 1918-D was produced during the World War I era at Denver, when wartime demands required steady production of circulating coinage. The bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc remained the standard composition throughout the conflict. Each Denver working die received its D mint mark individually by hand, and the northward displacement preserves a permanent record of the die setter's correction. Victor David Brenner's wheat-ear reverse and Lincoln portrait had been in production for nearly a decade by 1918.
