1918-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Recognized as CONECA RPM number one and a member of the Top 100 Repunched Mintmarks list, this 1918-D Lincoln Wheat Cent is among the most celebrated RPM varieties in the entire series. The variety progresses through two documented die states on each side. Obverse Stage A shows no visible markers beyond the repunched D, though the absence of Stage B die chips confirms early die state. By Stage B, die chips appear on either side of the upper area of the L in LIBERTY, a light east-west die scratch develops between the lower B and E of LIBERTY, and small die chips form inside the lower loop of the B and at the left lower area of the E. The reverse follows a parallel progression: Stage A is clean, but Stage B introduces a die gouge in the field east from the upper area of the last A in AMERICA. The Top 100 designation reflects both the boldness of the secondary mintmark and the variety's importance within the broader context of early Denver Mint wheat cent production, where hand-punched mintmarks routinely produced collectible repunching.
