1917-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as the primary repunched mintmark for the 1917-S date, this Lincoln Wheat Cent shows an S/S South displacement from the San Francisco Mint during World War I-era production. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1917-S 1-cent WRPM-001. Die markers: obverse has a WSW/ENE die scratch through the upper area of WE and a die chip left of center from W in WE; reverse shows a large die chip under the left wheat stem above center and a large die chip left of the right wheat stem tip. The two large reverse die chips are distinctive attribution markers. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1917-S had a mintage of approximately 32.6 million pieces.
