Description

This 1917 (S) Lincoln Wheat cent displays a misaligned die strike. The obverse is struck towards the northeast corner and the reverse is struck towards the east-northeast when viewing each side right side up. Misaligned dies occur when one die shifts laterally relative to the other during striking, causing the design to appear off-center in different directions on each side. Unlike an off-center strike where the planchet is mispositioned, a misaligned die error shows the full rim on both sides but with the design shifted in opposite directions.
