Description

The Wexler Team cataloged this D/D Northwest repunched mintmark as 1913-D 5-cent WRPM-001 on the Type 1 Buffalo Nickel — the original 1913 design featuring James Earle Fraser's bison standing atop a raised mound. This Type 1 reverse, used only during the first part of 1913 before being replaced by the flat-field Type 2, places the denomination FIVE CENTS on the elevated mound beneath the bison. The raised mound design proved problematic because the high-relief text wore quickly in circulation, prompting the mid-year switch. For variety collectors, the Type 1 presents a different authentication challenge than its Type 2 counterpart: the mound's curvature crowds the mintmark area, making it harder to distinguish a genuine repunch from die erosion. The D/D Northwest displacement mirrors the shift documented on the Type 2 version, suggesting similar hand-punching dynamics produced comparable results.
