1913-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

From the first year of James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel at the Denver Mint, this doubled die reverse exhibits a combination of Class IV offset hub rotation and Class VIII tilted hub doubling — cataloged by CONECA as 1-R-IV+VIII, indicating both mechanisms acted on the same die during hubbing. The doubling spreads westward on E PLURIBUS UNUM and also appears on the hair atop the back of the buffalo, providing two distinct areas for attribution. The Type I reverse (also called Mound or Raised Ground variety) places FIVE CENTS on a raised mound, a design that was modified to the recessed variety later in 1913 because the raised design wore too quickly in circulation. Die marker notes indicate no significant markers on either obverse or reverse beyond the doubling itself. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1913-D 5c WDDR-001, this is the first cataloged doubled die reverse for the Denver Mint's inaugural Buffalo Nickel production. The dual-class CONECA designation makes this variety a teaching example for understanding how different hubbing errors can combine on a single die.
