1913-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

In the first year of James Earle Fraser's iconic Buffalo Nickel, the 1913-D DDR-001 presents medium spread on "E PLU" of PLURIBUS and the fur detail on the back of the upper neck of the bison — the American Buffalo that gives the series its popular name. Attributed by VarietyVista as UVC-007 with die marriage DMR-007, both obverse and reverse appear in early die state, with later states unconfirmed. The reverse is RDV-001, the Type 1 "Bison on Mound" design where the animal stands on a raised mound — a feature that proved vulnerable to excessive wear and was modified to a flat-ground design (Type 2) later in 1913. Denver-minted first-year Buffalo Nickels are keenly sought by collectors, and a doubled die reverse from this date-mint combination represents a compelling intersection of first-year significance and die variety collecting. The doubling on the bison's fur is particularly noteworthy given the already intricate texture of Fraser's original design.
