Description
Discovered by Oscar Simpson in April 1977, this New Orleans Morgan Dollar is one of the rare VAMs distinguished by an edge anomaly. Designated 24 (revised) III2 10 C3a (Doubled 18, Overlapping Reeding, Polished Neck) with rarity 181, the obverse shows the 1 doubled as a slanted line left of the lower crossbar, first 8 doubled at top left and right outside of upper loop, and ear very slightly doubled at lower right inside. Light scribbling die polishing lines on Liberty's head and neck attempted to remove fine die pitting. Most remarkably, the edge exhibits overlapping reeding for about 8 segments at 3 o'clock and 6 segments at 6 o'clock, with additional overlapping at 1 and 4 o'clock. Edge varieties on Morgan Dollars are exceedingly uncommon, as the vast majority of VAM attributions focus on obverse and reverse characteristics, making this overlapping reeding a distinctive and noteworthy feature.
