Description

Carson City Morgan dollars rank among the most avidly collected American coins, and the 1884-CC VAM-7A is one of the most distinctive die varieties in that celebrated series. Carrying the attribution Doubled 8 Bottom, CC Tilted Left, Die Gouge Cheek, Die Break ATE, this variety is catalogued as 7A III27 C3e and was discovered in October 2005. The 1884-CC VAM-7A was produced with the exact same die pair as the parent 1884-CC VAM-7. The reverse, classified as C3e, is defined by its advanced deterioration: heavy die cracks at the top of STATES, with a crack extending up to the denticles above A and a displaced field above ATE. Fine raised rust pits cover the eagle and wreaths. The "Die Break ATE" component, referring to the dramatic cracking through ATE of STATES, provides an immediate primary identification marker. Carson City Mint coins were produced from 1870 to 1893 and are prized for their association with the Nevada silver mining era. Morgan dollars are 90% silver, designed by George T. Morgan. The tilted CC mintmark, die gouge on the cheek, doubled lower 8, and definitive ATE die break together make VAM-7A an unmistakable variety in the Carson City Morgan canon.
