Description

Preserved in the collection of Reza Buan, this typical die clash on an 1884-CC Morgan Dollar was documented by MadDieClashes and captures the telltale evidence of reverse design elements transferring into the obverse die during an unprotected die-to-die contact event. Clash marks from the reverse are visible under Liberty's chin and in the back of her cap, areas where the eagle's wings and surrounding design elements pressed into the obverse die surface. Additionally, a small die clash mark appears just under the N of IN on the reverse, where obverse design detail reciprocally transferred into the reverse die during the same clash event. Carson City Mint Morgan Dollars hold a special place in American numismatics — the Carson City facility, established in 1870 to process Comstock Lode silver, operated only until 1893 and produced comparatively small mintages that have made CC-mint coins among the most prized in the Morgan Dollar series. The 1884-CC had a mintage of just over 1.1 million pieces, a modest figure that contributes to the date's desirability.
