Description
The 1883-O VAM-3A has a layered attribution: originally discovered in 2010 by Jason Henrichsen, it was revised in 2017 by LD Lane, also known as ChiefRet. The revised designation is 3A (revised) III2 13 C3b — O/O Right, Doubled 1, Beveled Field ST, Doubled Ear. The obverse III2 13 shows the ear slightly doubled at the left and right outside and at the earlobe, a feature added in the 2017 revision. The reverse C3b carries the primary attribution anchor: an O/O Right repunched mintmark with the secondary O displaced rightward, along with a beveled field in the ST area of STATES — a polished or depressed die surface area reflecting New Orleans Mint die preparation practices. The 1883-O had a mintage of approximately 8.7 million coins. The revision of this variety eight years after original discovery exemplifies how the VAM community continually refines attributions as more specimens are examined and die-state documentation improves over time.
