1879-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Tied to four distinct VAM die pairings — VAM-15, VAM-17, VAM-54, and VAM-114 — this 1879-S Morgan Dollar repunched mintmark is among the most extensively cross-referenced RPM varieties in the silver dollar series. Cataloged as WRPM-001 by the Wexler Team and CONECA RPM #3, the variety shows the S mintmark punched southeast of its final position. This same obverse die also carries a repunched date (WRPD-001) with 1 over 1 visible in the date, making specimens double-variety coins bearing both RPM and RPD. Die markers include a die scratch running SSE from the lower center of the last U in PLURIBUS to the bonnet on the obverse, while the reverse presents a N/S die scratch to the right of the first olive from center on the left. The pictured example represents the VAM-15 die pairing. The 1879-S Morgan Dollar was struck at San Francisco during the early Morgan Dollar series designed by George T. Morgan, and the convergence of four VAM numbers on a single obverse die demonstrates how one repunched mintmark die was paired with multiple reverses during its service life.
