Description
1878-P VAM-14.6 Dot On Ear Discovered by Martin Field, August 1979. 14-6 I1 6 - A1c (Dot on Ear) (189) Obverse I1 6 - Slightly doubled first three right stars and first six left stars towards rim. E is doubled at bottom and U-UNU doubled at bottom inside towards rim. Both 8's are doubled slightly at top inside of both loops and 7 is doubled slightly on right side of vertical shaft. Ear is over polished with dot die break in middle of lower earlobe. Reverse A1c - Letters in UNITED doubled strongly on top and bottom. STATES OF AMERICA letters doubled at bottom. ONE DOLLAR letters doubled at top. Left wreath strongly doubled. Three small feathers added on eagle's right and two on eagle's left side between leg and bottom of wing. DPIS – In 1878 dates were part of the master die so there is no variation in position. Emission Sequence Obverse: Reverse: Comments: The VAM 14.6 is rare in all grades. with 25-40 specimens estimated. Known to exist in high grades, reported in DMPL, PL and semi-PL up to MS64. This is an 8 Tailfeather Morgan variety. The A1c reverse is shared by VAMs 1878-P VAM-3, 1878-P VAM-4, 1878-P VAM-5, 1878-P VAM-14.6, 1878-P VAM-14.7, 1878-P VAM-14.11, 1878-P VAM-14.12, 1878-P VAM-14.14, 1878-P VAM-14.17 and 1878-P VAM-14.18. All but VAMs 3 and 4 are major rarities.
