1878 Morgan Dollar - 8TF - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

1878 WDDR-002 is a doubled die reverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extra tail feathers show under the 2nd, 3rd and 4th tail feathers, and between the 4th and 5th and the 5th and 6th. The arrow feathers, the olive branch and some olive leaves are doubled, and the bottom of the wreath shows some doubling. Some letters of IN GOD WE TRUST are doubled from a very early hubbing, and USA and ONE DOLLAR show very slight doubling. The obverse is WDDO-002, with hub breaks at the bottom of UNUM's first U and the lower left of its N. On the reverse, a hub chip sits on the bottom of DOLLAR's D, over-polishing has detached the eagle's right wing from the leg, and a die crack runs across the tops of the USA letters, the right star and the bottom of LLAR. Gary Wagnon submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 21-R-III, and its VAM number is 38.
