1878 Morgan Dollar - Reverse of 1878 - VAM-112A
Error
Description
Sharing the VAM-112A designation with its Reverse of 1879 counterpart, this 1878 Philadelphia Mint Morgan dollar is paired with the Reverse of 1878, distinguished by its flat eagle breast and original tail feather arrangement. Classified as 112A II/I 14 - B2a (Bar in B, Clashed Obverse G) with emission sequence number 193, the obverse displays a clashed die with a partial incuse G from the reverse GOD appearing next to Liberty's neck, matching the clash evidence found on the Reverse of 1879 pairing. The B2a reverse shows a bar in B caused by die damage or progressive fill. The existence of two VAM-112A entries, one for each reverse hub type, reflects the unique production history of the 1878 Morgan dollar, where the Philadelphia Mint transitioned between reverse designs during the first year. Discovered in 2010, this variety documents a die clash on an obverse paired with the earlier reverse hub. Because 1878 dates were incorporated into the master die, eliminating position variations seen in later years, collectors must rely on die-specific markers such as the clash transfer and bar in B to distinguish this from other 1878-P VAM varieties.
