Description

1878 WDDO-006 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 Morgan dollar (Reverse of 1878), cataloged by the Wexler team. Most letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM show signs of doubling, and LIBERTY has a close spread to the right. Every star on both sides shows traces of doubling, strongest on L7, R1 and R4, and the date is doubled too. On Obverse Stage A, UNUM's N is broken at its lower left and its M at its lower right; Stages B and C are the same. Reverse Stage A is the VAM-40 die pairing. Die cracks join most of the upper USA letters and the lower parts of the ONE DOLLAR letters, a V-shaped scratch lies between ICA of AMERICA and the leaves, and the bottom of DOLLAR's D is broken. Reverse Stage B is the VAM-31 pairing, and Reverse Stage C the VAM-110 pairing. Istvan Henrik submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 15-O-III, and its VAM numbers are 31, 40 and 110.
