1878 Morgan Dollar - Reverse of 1878 - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

1878 WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 1878 Morgan dollar (Reverse of 1878), cataloged by the Wexler team. Doubling spread to the west shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, the eagle's left wing feathers, the upper right side of the right wing, and the feather details of the head and neck. The feather ends on the arrows and the leaves of the olive branch show some doubling too. The obverse is WDDO-003, with a broken point on the fourth star at right and an over-polished nostril missing its bottom. On the reverse, two scratches run SE from the wreath's lower right side through the second L of DOLLAR, a diagonal scratch sits above the leaves right of the end of the olive branch, and a light crack crosses the tops of TAT in STATES. Joe Groff submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 27-R-III, and its VAM number is 190.
