Description

1878 WDDO-005 is a doubled die obverse on the 1878 Morgan dollar (Reverse of 1878), cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler lists the doubling on E PL, the R and the S of E PLURIBUS, and on every star on both sides, with LIBERTY spread slightly to the left. Obverse Stage A has a thin scratch running SW through LIBERTY's R and a horizontal scratch between the hair curls above the 78. Obverse Stage B adds clash marks running NW from the upper chin, the lips and the nose, clash marks running SW from the top of the neck, many NW/SE polish lines crossing the hair details and circling the bonnet, and light NE/SW polish lines on the eye. Obverse Stage C is unchanged from Stage B. Reverse Stage A is the VAM-81 die pairing. On Reverse Stage B the reverse is WDDR-005, in the VAM-33 pairing, with a patch of polish lines reaching into the left side of the eagle's throat, polishing on the upper right leaves, and polish lines through TRUST. On Reverse Stage C the reverse is an unnumbered doubled die (WDDR-???), the VAM-30 pairing. Istvan Henrik submitted the variety; Brian Allen supplied more photos, taken of a coin from John A. Wexler. CONECA lists it as 14-O-III, and its VAM numbers are 30, 33 and 81.
