1878 Morgan Dollar - 8TF - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

1878 WDDR-005 is a doubled die reverse on the 1878 8 Tail Feathers Morgan dollar, cataloged by the Wexler team. Extra tail feathers appear under the 3rd feather, between the 3rd and 4th, the 4th and 5th, and the 5th and 6th, and under the 6th. The eagle's legs and talons are strongly doubled, and the branch it holds is doubled along the bottom, as are that branch's leaves. Doubling also shows on the left wing's feather details, under UNITED's D, and along the base of STATES's E. Obverse Stage A is the VAM-33 die pairing. It has a thin scratch running SW through LIBERTY's R, a horizontal scratch between the hair curls above the 78, clash marks running NW from the upper chin, the lips and the nose, and clash marks running SW from the top of the neck. Many NW/SE polish lines cross the hair details and circle the bonnet, and light NE/SW polish lines mark the eye. Obverse Stage B is the VAM-44 pairing. Reverse Stage A has clash marks between the wing and the upper left leaves of the wreath, two strong diagonal scratches through the feathers of the eagle's upper right wing, and polishing debris between the upper left ribbon and the leaves. Reverse Stage B is the same as Stage A. Istvan Henrik submitted the variety. CONECA lists it as 17-R-III, and its VAM numbers are 33 and 44.
