Washington tokens from 1792 featuring a legend reverse rather than the large eagle design seen on the companion "Large Eagle" pieces. The most notable varieties bear the inscription GENERAL OF THE AMERICAN ARMIES on the reverse, with both plain edge and lettered "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" edge versions known. The series also includes the "Born Virginia" cent with an eagle reverse and the text WASHINGTON BORN VIRGINIA, as well as a mid-twentieth-century restrike. These pieces were part of the broader effort in 1792 to create a Washington-themed national coinage, though Congress ultimately chose allegorical figures over presidential portraits for federal coins.
