About This Coin
Washington tokens featuring the unusual design of two overlapping busts on the obverse — hence the "Double Head" name. These undated pieces (attributed to circa 1820) exist with both plain and engrailed (notched) edge varieties. The design likely represents a die-sinker's creative interpretation rather than any official commission. A related "Military Bust" mule variety also exists, combining the Double Head obverse with a Military Bust reverse. These tokens were probably produced as collectibles during the early nineteenth century when Washington memorabilia was in high demand.
