Description
A bronze token dated 1792 with the "WASHINGTON PRESIDENT" obverse and "General of the American Armies" reverse, distinguished by its USA edge lettering, cataloged as PCGS #720. The edge inscription reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" elevates this token from a simple commemorative to a piece that was intended as a proposed design for the new American coinage. The year 1792 was critical for American numismatics: the Mint Act was passed on April 2, 1792, establishing the United States Mint, and numerous pattern pieces and proposed designs were produced both in America and England. The USA edge lettering indicates this token was specifically created as a contender for official adoption, not merely as a commercial souvenir. The obverse shows Washington in military uniform, while the reverse references his wartime generalship. Like many 1792-dated Washington pieces, this was struck in Birmingham, England by established token manufacturers. Copper or bronze, approximately 28-30mm, cent-weight.
Rarity Notes
Rare. The USA edge variety is one of the most numismatically significant Washington tokens, with its edge lettering indicating potential official coinage aspirations.
