(c.1960) Medal Breen-1245 Restrike
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
A restrike medal cataloged as Breen-1245, produced circa 1960 from dies related to the Washington President series. This mid-twentieth century restrike reproduces the design of one of the eighteenth-century Washington President tokens, making the design accessible to collectors who could not acquire the rare and expensive originals. Restrikes of early American tokens became popular in the mid-twentieth century as the collector market expanded and interest in colonial and early federal numismatics grew. Walter Breen's catalog number 1245 places this specific restrike within his comprehensive classification of American numismatic items. The obverse reproduces the Washington portrait with presidential legend, while the reverse carries the complementary design from the original dies or faithful copies thereof. While lacking the antiquity and historical cachet of the originals, these restrikes serve an important educational and collecting purpose by preserving the designs and making them available to a wider audience. Metal and dimensions consistent with the original type.
Rarity Notes
Available. Mid-twentieth century restrikes are more accessible than the original eighteenth-century tokens.
