About This Coin
The "Ugly" Head group of the Washington Pieces (1783-1800) series holds the pieces described below. The so-called Ugly Head is the WASHINGTON THE GREAT D G copper of 1784, with a crude head on one side and a chain of thirteen rings bearing the initials of the states on the other. Baker lists it as No. 8 and knew of two pieces, one in the Mint collection and one in the Appleton cabinet. Later writers have suggested an American origin and a satirical intent, and record pieces in copper and one in white metal (search).
