About This Coin
Nova Constellatio ("New Constellation") coins encompass two distinct groups. The first is a set of extremely rare 1783 silver patterns designed under the direction of Gouverneur Morris for a proposed national decimal coinage system, with denominations of 5 units (Quint), 100 units (Bit), 500 units, and 1000 units (Mark). These patterns represent one of the earliest attempts at a decimal monetary system for the United States. The second group consists of more common copper halfpennies struck in 1783, 1785, and 1786, featuring an eye of providence surrounded by rays and thirteen stars. The coppers are classified by ray type (pointed vs. blunt), US lettering size (Large US vs. Small US), and date size. The 1786 issue reverses the legend to "Constellatio Nova." Contemporary imitations also circulated alongside genuine issues.
