About This Coin

A unique silver threepence struck in 1790 by Standish Barry, a Baltimore watchmaker and silversmith. This is the only known privately issued silver coin produced in the United States during the post-colonial period, making it a landmark piece in American numismatics. The obverse features a bust with flowing hair and the date, while the reverse displays the inscription BALTIMORE TOWN JULY 4, 90, tying it to Independence Day celebrations. Extremely few specimens survive, and the coin remains one of the most sought-after early American issues.
