Albany Church Penny

Albany Church Penny

About This Coin

Copper tokens produced around 1790 for the First Church in Albany, New York, believed to have been used as communion tokens or church-related currency. They feature the inscription CHURCH PENNY along with a reference to Albany. Two varieties exist: one with a letter "D" above the church building on the reverse, and one without. These pieces are quite scarce and hold particular interest as early examples of religious institutions issuing their own tokens in America.
