About This Coin
The Castorland "Jetons" group of the Post-1776 Private and Regional Issues (1778-1820) series holds the pieces described below. The Castorland jeton was struck at the Paris Mint in 1796 for the Compagnie de New York, whose French settlers bought about 210,000 acres in northern New York for a colony named for the beaver; the colony was given up in 1814 (Wikipedia). The Paris Mint kept striking pieces from the dies for collectors long afterwards, and many later strikes carry the metal named on the edge, such as ARGENT, CUIVRE or OR (search).
