About This Coin
Copper tokens produced by Dr. Samuel Higley (and after his death in 1737 by his brother John) from copper mined at a private mine near Granby, Connecticut. These are among the earliest copper coins produced in the American colonies. The obverse features a deer while the reverse shows either three crowned hammers or a broad axe with the legend "I CUT MY WAY THROUGH." Daniel Freidus cataloged 15 die marriages with approximately 63 surviving specimens.
