"Voce Populi" Coins

About This Coin
Irish-made copper farthings and halfpennies dated 1760, bearing the Latin motto VOCE POPULI ("By the Voice of the People"). Though styled after regal Irish coinage with a laureate bust resembling George III, these were privately produced tokens — likely struck in Dublin — that circulated widely in Ireland and eventually found their way to the American colonies. The series includes several interesting die varieties, most notably the "P" varieties (where a small letter P appears near the bust on certain halfpennies) and the VOOE blundered legend. The rare "1700" blundered date variety is particularly sought after by collectors.
