About This Coin
Tokens inscribed NEW YORKE IN AMERICA are thought to date from about 1670 and are among the earliest pieces tied to New York. The NEW YORKE IN AMERICA token is a small undated piece known in brass and in white metal. John Kleeberg read the eagle on a ragged staff as the crest of Francis Lovelace, governor of New York from 1668 to 1673, and the other side as a rebus on his name, which would date the token to those years. He found it lighter than any English farthing struck after 1672 and the lettering the work of an unskilled hand.
