About This Coin

Tokens inscribed NEW YORKE IN AMERICA, believed to date from around 1670, and representing some of the earliest pieces specifically associated with New York. Struck in both brass and pewter, these undated tokens feature a spread eagle on one side and a profile bust on the other. Their exact purpose is uncertain — they may have been intended as trade tokens for the young colony. The eagle design is notable as an early use of the symbol in American numismatics, predating the federal eagle by over a century.
