About This Coin
American Plantation Tokens are tin pieces of 1688 made in the name of James II for the English colonies in America. These tin tokens, valued at one twenty-fourth of a Spanish real, were made in 1688 under a petition by Richard Holt for a tin coinage for the American plantations; the petition is preserved, but no patent has been found. They show James II on horseback and the royal arms on crowned shields. Eric Newman identified six pairs of dies, and restrikes were made from original dies about 1828.
