Description
This is the 1787 Brasher doubloon with the EB hallmark on the eagle's wing. Ephraim Brasher, a New York goldsmith, petitioned the state in February 1787 for leave to coin copper. His gold pieces show the sun rising over mountains above the sea with NOVA EBORACA COLUMBIA EXCELSIOR and his name, and an eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1787, with his EB hallmark punched into the eagle. Crosby gives 408 grains and a plain edge for the doubloon. Crosby describes the punch on the right wing on all but one of the doubloons he knew. PCGS number 487.
