Description
This is Ephraim Brasher's gold half doubloon of 1787. Ephraim Brasher, a New York goldsmith, petitioned the state in February 1787 for leave to coin copper. His gold pieces show the sun rising over mountains above the sea with NOVA EBORACA COLUMBIA EXCELSIOR and his name, and an eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM and 1787, with his EB hallmark punched into the eagle. Crosby gives 408 grains and a plain edge for the doubloon. It was struck from the doubloon dies on a planchet of about half the weight, and the only known example is in the Smithsonian collection (search). PCGS number 489.
