1944 Atypical Die Clash ADC-25c-1944-01

ADC-25c-1944-01 This 1944 Washington quarter has a single strong die clash that is seen on both the obverse and reverse dies. Neither clash has been abraded. This coin is in the private collection of Bill Latour. Parts of the eagle’s wing can be seen clashed into the obverse die in front of Washington’s nose, lips and also the back of his head. While these clash marks are not particularly strong, the reverse die has strong clash marks from the bust of Washington. One must remember that the reverse die has shallower incused deign elements. This allows the obverse die to “bottom out” on the reverse die faster than the reverse die bottoming out on the obverse die when the dies do clash. This will result in a strong clash seen on the reverse die and a weaker clash seen on the obverse die. The pictures of the reverse die show just that affect, with the out line of Washington’s bust being a much stronger clash than the obverse clash marks.
