2022 (P) Maya Angelou Quarter - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

2022-P MA WDDR-003 is a doubled die reverse on the 2022-P Maya Angelou quarter (American Women series), cataloged by the Wexler team. The doubling shows inside Maya Angelou's earring. Wexler describes two stages of each die. Obverse Stage A is the master die doubled WMDO-001 and carries these markers: a die chip on the nose's bridge; a crack crossing the back of the mouth, with a gouge just above that crack; feeder finger scrapes behind the ear and also between the ponytail and the neck; several gouges left of and above the P mint mark; a gouge in front of the chin; and a gouge under the L of LIBERTY on its right side. Obverse Stage B keeps every Stage A marker and adds a weak remnant of a die clash showing Angelou's face behind the ear, another gouge above the P mint mark, a large gouge inside the curve of the date's first 2, a gouge under the U in TRUST, and a gouge near the rim over the L of LIBERTY on its right side. Reverse Stage A is the master die doubled WMDR-001. Its markers are a die dent on the rim under the LL of DOLLAR, a thin WNE/ESE scratch above the head, a gouge over the U of ANGELOU on its left side, and another gouge right of the A of ANGELOU. Reverse Stage B still has those markers and adds a weak die clash remnant next to the left wing's front feather, die scrapes above and to the right of the U in ANGELOU, a large gouge well NW of the Q in QUARTER, a series of small gouges halfway between the bird silhouette's tail feathers and the L's in DOLLAR, a large gouge SW of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and two large gouges flanking the ray that points to the M in AMERICA, one on each side. George W. Powell, Jr. submitted Stage A and William Kerr submitted Stage B. VarietyVista lists the variety as VDDR-002.
