Description

Appearing on the 2021 Crossing the Delaware Quarter — which depicts George Washington's famous Christmas night crossing of the Delaware River in 1776, a turning point of the Revolution — this VDDR-004 shows light spread to the north manifesting as an extra bottom edge of Washington's cuff on the reverse. The Crossing the Delaware quarter holds a transitional place in the U.S. quarter series: issued as a standalone design in 2021 after the America the Beautiful program concluded, it bridged the gap before the American Women Quarters Program began in 2022. This variety has been documented across three die stages, with the most notable feature emerging in Stage C where a die crack across the bust appears in late die state, providing a dramatic secondary marker visible without magnification. The late die state crack documents progressive structural failure of the reverse die under sustained pressure. Earlier stages show the variety without the crack, allowing collectors to assemble a die state progression from clean impressions through the final cracked specimens.
