The 2021 (D) American Innovation Dollar - North Carolina, Position B represents a Denver Mint issue from the American Innovation Dollars 2018 to Date series. The U.S. Mint struck 454,450 North Carolina dollars at Denver in all, with Position A and Position B edges counted together; how the total divides between the two is not recorded. The obverse features a profile of the Statue of Liberty with a small stylized gear privy mark, and the reverses honor innovations and innovators from each state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. This coin honors the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which opened in 1795 as the nation's first public institution of higher learning. New Hampshire (the first home video game system — Ralph Baer), Virginia (the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel), New York (the Erie Canal), and North Carolina (the first public university — University of North Carolina). Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906.
