Description

The inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above the torch on the Roosevelt Dime reverse, and its thin serif letterforms can serve as a diagnostic area for doubled die detection. When hub doubling affects the upper portion of the reverse, these letters may show secondary impressions visible as faint shadowing or displaced serifs under magnification. WDDR-003 for the 2017 Philadelphia Mint Roosevelt Dime is one of the varieties documented from that year's production. The phrase "out of many, one" has appeared on U.S. coinage since the nation's earliest issues, and on the Roosevelt Dime it occupies a position where the die curvature transitions from the central design to the peripheral lettering — a zone where rotational or angular hub misalignment can produce particularly noticeable displacement. The 2017 production year continued the Philadelphia Mint's pattern of generating identifiable DDR varieties, though in smaller numbers than the preceding year's remarkable twenty-two. Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 10¢ WDDR-003.
