Description
Recording the first cataloged retained cud on the 2017-P Roosevelt Dime, RCD-10c-2017P-01 documents a die rim fracture where the separated fragment remained trapped in the die cavity during subsequent strikes. A retained cud produces a raised, flat, or offset area at the fracture location on every coin the damaged die contacts, with the design still present, and the specific position, size, and surface character of the affected zone distinguishes one retained cud from another. Philadelphia Mint production. The Roosevelt Dime has been in continuous production since 1946, making it one of the longest-running active designs in U.S. coinage, and the 2017 issue continues John R. Sinnock's original portrait with the standard torch, olive branch, and oak branch reverse. Modern dime production at Philadelphia generates hundreds of millions of coins annually, requiring a substantial population of working dies, each susceptible to rim-area fatigue that can progress from cracks to pre-cuds to full cuds. The 2017-P date carries the P mint mark restored to dimes in 1980. Cataloged and verified by Cuds on Coins.
