Description
VarietyVista cataloged this 2015 America the Beautiful Quarter doubled die reverse as VDDR-022, describing medium spread directed northeast that manifests as extra blades of grass above the right end of the upper grass strip on the reverse design. The grass-blade doubling is a botanically specific diagnostic: the secondary hub impression created ghost grass blades that appear to sprout above the primary grass strip, producing a visually distinctive cluster of extra vegetation that would not be present on a normally struck coin. Die stage documentation tracks three states, though attribution data remains partially incomplete (UVC-???? and DMR-0?? indicate the variety's unique variety code and die marker record numbers have not yet been assigned definitive values). Stage A is EDS (unconfirmed). Stage B introduces a die chip under the eye on the reverse at Early-to-Mid Die State (EMDS), with the obverse also classified as EMDS. Stage C represents Late Die State (LDS), also unconfirmed. The die chip under the eye in Stage B serves dual purposes — it is both a die state marker and an attribution point, because its presence or absence immediately narrows the specimen's position in the die's production chronology. Struck at a U.S. Mint facility on copper-nickel clad planchets as part of the ATB quarter program, this variety demonstrates how nature-themed reverses with organic design elements like grass, leaves, and foliage provide unique doubled die signatures that differ fundamentally from the architectural or portrait-based doubling seen on other coin types.
