Description

The 2015-P Bombay Hook quarter WDDR-005 (Wexler Variety ID 2015-P 25c DE WDDR-005) is a distinct doubled die reverse from a different working die than companion WDDR-004. Where WDDR-004 shows an extra blade of grass on the right side of the middle grass strip, WDDR-005 shows short extra blades at the center of the same strip between the great egret and the great blue heron — a similar but positionally different hub doubling expression consistent with separate hubbing sessions. Four die markers differentiate this die from WDDR-004. On the obverse: a short vertical die gouge above the IT in UNITED; die pitting to the left of the upper second T in STATES; and a small die gouge between the upper I and N of IN. On the reverse: a large die chip below the great blue heron's eye; and a die crack running NNW/SSE down the back of the great blue heron's head and upper neck. That die crack is a useful stage marker indicating stress fracturing during the production run. Together, WDDR-004 and WDDR-005 illustrate how two working dies can produce cataloged-distinct hub doubling varieties from the same hub geometry.
