Description

Cataloged on the 2015 Philadelphia Mint Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Quarter, this VDDR-019 displays light spread to the east creating extra blades of grass beside the right end of the upper grass strip on the reverse. Bombay Hook, located along the Delaware Bay coast, is renowned for its tidal salt marshes and migratory waterfowl. The quarter's reverse captures this landscape with a great blue heron amid marsh grasses — and it is these grass elements that carry the doubled die effect, where hub displacement produced faint secondary impressions alongside the primary blades. The variety has been documented across multiple die stages: Stage A with obverse and reverse in early die state, Stage B in mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). Light spread on organic elements like grass blades can be challenging to distinguish from normal relief, making careful comparison against a known normal specimen essential for attribution. As part of the America the Beautiful quarter program that ran from 2010 through 2021, Bombay Hook represents one of fifty-six national site designs that each served as a unique canvas for die variety research.
